Территория США в южной части Тихого океана (Полинезия). Состоит из семи (из них пять вулканических) островов в восточной части архипелага Самоа (или островов Мореплавателей [Navigators Islands]). Основные - Тутуила [Tutuila] и Аунуу [Aunuu]. Площадь 197 кв. км, население около 67 тыс. человек (2000). Административный центр - г. Паго-Паго [Pago-Pago] на острове Тутуила, 31 тыс. жителей. Основная этническая группа - самоанцы [ Samoans], полинезийский народ; в основном протестанты. Официальные языки - английский и самоанский; большинство населения двуязычно. Острова открыты в 1722. Стали владением США по Берлинскому договору 1899. В 1900-51 территория находилась под управлением Министерства ВМФ [ Department of the Navy], с 1951 - Министерства внутренних дел [ Department of the Interior, U.S.]. По Конституции 1960 и 1967 исполнительная власть осуществляется губернатором, избираемым населением на четыре года. Законодательный орган Фоно [Fono, the] состоит из Сената [ Senate] (18 сенаторов), избираемого из вождей племен на четыре года, и Палаты представителей [ House of Representatives] (20 депутатов, избираемых населением на два года). С 1981 делегат Самоа с совещательным голосом направляется в Палату представителей Конгресса США [ Congress, U.S.]. Главные отрасли экономики - производство копры и рыбных консервов.
